[[SECTION: ■The first ukiyo-e woodblock print of “Grappler Baki” ]]

1991Grappler Baki, which began serialization in 2015, has become a monumental fighting manga with its overwhelming drawing power and solid story. The fierce battles of Baki Hanma, known as the strongest creature on earth, from his youth are revived in a new form as ukiyo-e woodblock prints, a traditional Japanese craft.

The design is by an artist based in Sapporo.KOJIMAN(Kojiman) is in charge. The worldview of "Grappler Baki" is boldly depicted with a unique style that combines traditional Japanese ukiyo-e expressions with the sensibilities of street culture.

This samurai painting was created by Kuniyoshi Utagawa, a leading ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo period, and depicts Matagoro Usui, a master swordsman, engaged in a deadly battle with a giant monkey in the mountains of Hida. It is characterized by a dynamic composition in which humans and beasts intermingle against the backdrop of wild nature, and is known as one of Kuniyoshi's warrior paintings that excels in its strength and sense of presence.

Using this historical illustration as a motif, this work depicts a new battle between the young Hanma Baki and the giant Yashazaru.“Battle of Hida Yamanaka”I am redrawing it as

By combining traditional ukiyo-e compositions with the dynamism of modern manga, this work expresses a timeless story of fierce battles.

[[SECTION:■How to create ukiyo-e woodblock prints ]]

Ukiyo-e is a traditional craft representing Japan. However, the entire industry is currently in crisis, and the number of craftsmen who have inherited this traditional technique, which has been around since the Edo period, has shrunk to around a dozen people across Japan.

While we are focusing on training young people, the fact is that our production volume, including raw materials, is shrinking day by day, and the number of employees is decreasing.

Together with the active craftsmen (illustrators, carvers, printers) who are trying to pass on this ukiyo-e woodblock printing technique to future generations, by combining traditional techniques with ``Grappler Baki'', we hope to have people all over the world learn about the wonders of handicrafts from a new perspective. We will continue to preserve this world-class culture that Japan is proud of and contribute to its development.

I want to deliver it to you. The essence of Japanese traditional crafts.

We continue to make ``Echizen Raw Paperback'' which has been passed down from generation to generation in the climate of Echizen, Fukui Prefecture.

``Kizukihosho'' is a type of Japanese paper that is made from kozo (Japanese mulberry tree) and is backed by Japanese tradition and history.

This time, we used the ultimate washi paper, which has smooth brushstrokes, is used for ceremonial paper for Shinto rituals as well as printmaking, and can withstand the pressure of hundreds of woodblock printings.100Years later,200We chose this company with the hope that it will continue to exist even years from now.

The ultimate hand-carved handrail aesthetic.

[Carving]

Ukiyo-e woodblock prints begin by separating the blocks into different colors based on the design and carving them out one by one. As you can see, it is a series of horrifyingly precise work, and even a deviation of just 1 millimeter has a huge effect on the entire surface, and the fact that the carving is completed without any deviation is truly the result of the craftsman's years of training.

We continue to carve everything by hand, including not only the outline, hair, and figure, but also the background parts that do not appear in the title or color. Due to the use of such delicate woodblock prints, all Ukiyo-e prints can only be produced in limited editions, as they can become chipped or damaged during hundreds of printing operations.

[Printing]

Next, the printing process begins using traditional paints for each color. This is also a world where craftsmanship is required, where a shift of just 1 millimeter or too little pressure can cause the entire screen to shift.

Also, since I couldn't tell what the final color would be until I printed it, I pursued the ultimate color by changing the paint dozens of times.
