[[SECTION: ■The First Ukiyo-e Woodblock Print of 『Chainsaw Man』]]
This project is an ukiyo-e woodblock print work that fuses the world of 『Chainsaw Man』 with Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s representative masterpiece from the late Edo period, “One of the 108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden: Zhang Shun, the White Streak in the Waves.”
In the original work, Zhang Shun is depicted as a heroic figure who runs freely through the water, rendered with tremendous dynamism. Tearing through raging waves, with exaggerated musculature and a body overflowing with force, the composition represents the very height of Kuniyoshi’s dramatic style. In this collaboration, the dynamism of blood spray and water splashes is reimagined as the battle with the Typhoon Devil in the film, giving birth to a new heroic figure.

An Edo heroic tale and a modern dark hero.
The exaggerated physical expression and excessive energy depicted by Kuniyoshi have a surprising affinity with 『Chainsaw Man』. The delicate colors achieved through traditional ukiyo-e carving and printing techniques, together with the sharp tension created by the chainsaw blades.
Within the traditional Japanese expressive form of ukiyo-e, a new image of the dark hero is born.
[[SECTION: ■In Creating This Ukiyo-e Woodblock Print]]
Ukiyo-e woodblock prints are one of Japan’s representative traditional crafts, yet the number of successors has declined to only a limited few nationwide.
This work was created together with active painters, carvers, and printers, using carving and printing techniques passed down since the Edo period.
Through finely carved woodblocks, repeated hand-printing, and richly layered color expression, it realizes a fusion of pop culture and traditional technique.
Not only preserving tradition, but sharing it with the world.
This project is also an attempt to present new possibilities for ukiyo-e culture.
We want to deliver it to you. The very essence of Japan’s traditional crafts.

『Chainsaw Man』 and the masterpiece “One of the 108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden: Zhang Shun, the White Streak in the Waves” by the late Edo eccentric ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi come together in collaboration.
Through the traditional techniques of ukiyo-e woodblock printing passed down since the Edo period, a fusion across time has been realized.

Kuniyoshi’s depiction of Zhang Shun’s dynamic body, raging waves, and the tension of splashing water. By layering the violence and impulsiveness of 『Chainsaw Man』 into that dramatic composition, the heroic tale of Edo is reinterpreted as the image of a modern dark hero.
Finely carved woodblocks and repeated hand-printing by skilled artisans. The rich colors created by traditional pigments and the bold visual language that evokes spurting blood and the path of blades. Please experience this tension-filled contrast up close.
Past and present, classic and pop culture, hero and dark hero.
A one-of-a-kind ukiyo-e work, born here through a fusion that cuts through every boundary.
[[SECTION: ■“Ukiyo-e Design T-Shirt & Hoodie” Released Simultaneously]]

Akira Shiozaki
Born in Machida City, Tokyo in 1972
Completed graduate studies at the Tama Art University Graduate School of Fine Arts
A Japanese painter and ukiyo-e artist who mainly focuses on Japanese painting from the Heian to Edo periods, re-evaluating the diversity of themes and the high level of craftsmanship, while reconstructing the styles and essence of those eras to create flat paintings that appeal to the aesthetic sense and sensibilities of modern Japanese people, thereby presenting the presence and potential of “Japanese painting” in the world of art.

The ultimate Echizen Kizuki Hosho by Living National Treasure Ichibei Iwano

《Ichibei Iwano IX》
He succeeded to the name Ichibei Iwano IX in 1978. In June 2000, he was recognized as the holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property “Echizen Hosho” (Living National Treasure).
He continues to make “Echizen Kizuki Hosho,” handed down through generations in the climate of Echizen.
“Kizuki Hosho” is a paper made from kozo fibers, truly washi among washi, backed by Japan’s tradition and history.
With its smooth brush glide, it is used not only for ritual papers in Shinto ceremonies but also for prints, and it is the ultimate washi capable of withstanding the pressure of hundreds of woodblock impressions. We chose to use it this time with the hope of conveying the texture of Japan’s traditional paper from the Edo period and of creating something that will continue to endure 100 years, 200 years from now.
The aesthetics of ultimate hand-carving and hand-printing.
【Carving】

Ukiyo-e woodblock prints begin with separating the design by color into woodblocks and carving each one individually. As you can see, it is a terrifyingly meticulous series of tasks, and even a deviation of just 1 millimeter has a major effect on the entire image. The ability to carve perfectly without deviation is truly the fruit of many years of artisan training.
Not only the outlines, hair, and figure, but also the title and even the parts of the background that do not appear as color are all continuously carved by hand. Because such delicate woodblocks are used, they may chip or break during the thousands of impressions, which is why ukiyo-e can only ever be released as limited production.
【Carver - Kayoko Kan】
After graduating high school, she applied to the artisan apprenticeship program of the craftsmanship training support project in Arakawa Ward, Tokyo, and after seven years of training as an Edo woodblock carver, she became independent. Today, as one of the few female traditional craft masters certified by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, she contributes to the preservation of ukiyo-e woodblock print culture through her outstanding skill.

【Printing】

Next, the printing process begins using traditional pigments for each color. This is also a world that demands craftsmanship, where even a 1 millimeter misalignment or pressure that is too weak will cause misalignment across the entire image.
Also, since it is impossible to know exactly how the colors will turn out until they are printed, the pigments were adjusted dozens of times in pursuit of the ultimate color palette.
【Printer – Takuya Okada】
1983 Born in Ibaraki Prefecture.
After graduating high school, he studied Buddhist statue carving at the Kyoto Traditional Arts and Crafts University(current name), and after graduation trained as a printer at Watanabe Woodblock.
Became independent in 2012.
With approximately 8 years of career experience, he possesses a high level of skill as a printer.
Watanabe Woodblock is a publisher of shin-hanga represented by Hasui Kawase, and he has mastered many of the gradation and dry-brush techniques used in shin-hanga. In this work, the printing techniques for scattering and fixing gold and platinum were his proposal. He is a new-generation printer who actively takes on new techniques in addition to traditional ones.
An artisan certified under the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ selected preservation techniques for intangible cultural properties.
